Where a 20 KB limit is used
| Upload | Typical rule | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Exam signatures (SSC, IBPS, SBI, RRB) | 10–20 KB, JPG | Use the signature tool for the exact 140 × 60 px size |
| PAN photo on Protean (NSDL) | max 20 KB, 200 dpi | See the PAN page for the exact cm size |
| Older state and university portals | max 20 KB | Often no fixed pixel size |
| Scholarship and hostel forms | 10–20 KB | Check whether a minimum KB is also given |
If your form also gives a pixel size (for example 200 × 230), use the custom size tool on the home page so both the KB and the pixels match.

How to use
- Tap Choose photo (or drag a file in, or paste with Ctrl+V).
- Zoom in on the part you need — cropping away empty background is the easiest way to keep quality at 20 KB.
- Wait a second while the tool finds the best quality that stays under 20 KB.
- Tap Download JPG. The KB size is shown on the button so you know before you download.
How the 20 KB compression works
Twenty kilobytes is a very small budget — roughly the size of one paragraph of a Word file. To fit a photo into it without making it look like a mosaic, the tool works in a fixed order. It first tries JPEG quality 95%. If the file is too big it searches for the highest quality between 95% and 30% that fits. Only if even 30% is too heavy does it reduce the pixel size, a little at a time, and search again. This order matters: a slightly smaller picture at good quality looks far better than a full-size picture at very low quality.
The result is checked against the limit before you see it, so the number on the download button is the real size of the file you will get.
Common rejection reasons and fixes
Still “file too large” after compressing elsewhere. Some apps report 20 KB but save 20.4 KB, or count KB in 1024-byte units. This tool keeps a safety margin, so a 20 KB limit always means under 20,000 bytes.
Image looks blocky. You are probably sending the whole photo when only the face or text matters. Zoom in so the subject fills the frame; less background means more of the 20 KB goes to the part that is checked.
Text on a scan cannot be read. Hold the phone straight above the paper in daylight, fill the screen with the page, and crop the edges. Shadows and dark tables waste bytes and hide text.
Rejected for wrong format. WhatsApp images and screenshots are often WEBP or PNG. The download here is always a genuine .jpg.
Rejected for being too small in pixels. A few portals also have a minimum width. If yours does, set exact pixels using the custom tool on the home page rather than letting the size shrink freely.
Getting the best quality at 20 KB
Good light is worth more than any setting. A photo taken in daylight has less grain, and grain is what eats up kilobytes. Avoid digital zoom on the camera; walk closer instead. If your photo has a busy background, crop it tighter — a plain wall compresses to almost nothing, while a bookshelf behind you can double the file size.
Frequently asked questions
How can a 5 MB photo become 20 KB without losing everything?
Most of those 5 MB are pixels you do not need for an online form. The tool first shrinks the picture to a sensible size, then lowers JPEG quality only as much as needed. A face or a document photo still looks clear at 20 KB if it is cropped tightly.
Will the picture size (pixels) change?
On this page, yes, if needed: to fit 20 KB the tool may reduce the width and height. It always keeps the original shape. If your form needs fixed pixels, use the custom size tool on the home page instead.
Is 20 KB the same as 20,000 bytes?
Not exactly — some systems count 1 KB as 1024 bytes and others as 1000. The tool keeps the file under 20,000 bytes so it passes on both kinds of portal.
Can I resize a scanned document to 20 KB?
Yes, for a single page such as an ID card or caste certificate photo. Crop the edges of the table or bed away first. For multi-page documents in PDF form, use the PDF compressor instead.
Why is my image coming out much smaller than 20 KB?
Plain images like a signature on white paper have little detail, so they compress to just a few KB even at top quality. That is fine for a 'maximum 20 KB' rule. If your form also says minimum 10 KB, use the signature tool, which handles the minimum.
